Bill Maher clearly had a lot to get off his chest tonight after weeks of near-silence (save a derisive tweet) on Donald Trump threatening to and actually going through with filing a lawsuit against him. Maher offered Trump five million dollars as a joke to produce his birth certificate and settle whether he is the spawn of an orangutan, but Trump actually released the document and when Maher didn’t pony up, Trump sued him. Maher’s response: “Don, just suck it up like everybody else!”

Maher told Trump he needs to understand two basic concepts: “what a joke is and what a contract is.” He briefly summed up how he got to this point, making it clear it was an obvious joke about Trump. In the middle of the New Rule, Maher exasperatedly said, “Really? We’re going to court about this?” He remarked that Trump was so upset he couldn’t stop “flinging his feces.”

Maher made the pretty obvious point that what he said is defended under free speech laws and said Trump should “just suck it up like everybody else.” Instead, Trump’s lawyer initially sent Maher a letter with the following declaration:

“Attached hereto is a copy of Mr. Trump’s birth certificate, demonstrating that he is the son of Fred Trump, not an orangutan.”

Maher asked, “Do these morons even know it’s impossible for people and apes to produce offspring?” He said this is not a liberal case, but instead a “bold new precedent that jokes on late night talk shows are now legally binding agreements.” Maher tore into Trump and his lawyer by explaining that “the legal system in this country, it’s not a joke, it’s not a toy for rich idiots to play with.”

Maher stuck the knife in even further when he mockingly raised questions about why Trump only released the short-form birth certificate to satisfy those in the “ape-r” movement. Maher concluded by dismissing Trump as “a man who, for a little extra publicity, will happily keep alive a debate over whether his family reunions are held at the zoo.”
