The day after President Barack Obama gave the annual State of the Union address, first lady Michelle Obama went on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ to talk about her commitment to military families.
Modern first ladies usually take on a cause or issue to advocate, and Mrs. Obama has made hers the condition of military families.
“Because so few Americans are serving, you’ve got families that are dealing with their fourth and fifth and sixth deployment,” said Mrs. Obama. “Months go by where birthdays are missed. Parents struggling to do this alone, answering the questions for their children, ‘when’s mom or dad coming home.’ ”
Mrs. Obama said she has been impressed by the strength, pride and courage of military families, and their willingness to sacrifice without complaint. “So whenever I think I’m feeling bad, feeling sorry for myself,” she said, “I suck it up because of these families.”
