The debate came after Whoopi Goldberg played an ad from the Democratic National Committee which included Romney’s line, “I like to be able to fire people.”

After the ad was over, Goldberg said, “do people realize that this was taken out of context?” She noted that Romney was discussing insurance companies, and that his full statement read, “I like being able to fire people who provide services to me.”

Hasselbeck said she was all for this line of thinking about insurance companies. “He’s finally representing, I think, what we need and know will help us,” she said. Behar then cut in. She said the line “bespeaks to a tone-deafness on his part does not make him look good.” Hasselbeck tried to get a word in, but Behar shot her down. “Can I just finish, please?” she said. “His job was basically to fire people [when he was at Bain Capital].”

“No,” Hasselbeck said. “Yes!” Behar shot back. Hasselbeck said Romney actually “rescued companies that were going bankrupt” and that he had to make “tough decisions” about hiring and firing, just like any business.
