Savannah Guthrie had a surprisingly contentious chat with Alexis Stewart, daughter of Martha Stewart (and author of a recent book which made headlines for its revelations about Alexis’ famous mother) and Stewart’s co-author and former friend, Jennifer Koppelman Hutt. Not only that, there were two different segments, both of which were equally awkward.
During the first interview, Guthrie asked Stewart about some of the statements she wrote in the book, including that she “grew up with a glue gun pointed at [her] head” and that she had to be “perfect.” Stewart responded that the book was supposed to be “funny” and that “everyone can make funny stories up about their families.” Martha Stewart publicly supported the new book, despite the seemingly personal revelations.
Guthrie told Stewart and Koppelman Hutt that their “careers have largely been derived” from Martha Stewart’s success. The two women often poked fun at Martha Stewart and even created a show called “Whatever, Martha” (a spinoff of their first show “Whatever”) that made fun of “Martha Stewart Living” reruns. Koppelman Hutt cut off Guthrie and said they had other career accomplishments that are not related to Martha Stewart. Stewart reiterated that the book was not meant to be a tell-all and had “no dirt.”
During the second interview, Stewart and Koppelman Hutt stuck around to answer questions from viewers – an exercise they seemed less than enthusiastic about. When asked about their now-broken friendship (Koppelman Hutt referred to it as a “marriage,”) Stewart continued on the marriage metaphor and said, “one day you look at your husband and you’re like ‘oh – not anymore.'”
“That’s how she looked at me!” Koppelman said. Stewart also said, “if you want to punish somebody, never talking to them again is a really good method.”
