Meredith Vieira confirmed her departure from ‘Today’ this morning. While choking back tears, Vieira formally announced her decision and said she’ll be leaving the show next month.
“It’s a difficult day for me,” said Vieira, her voice thick with emotion. “I’m going to try to hold myself together here. But, after months of personal reflection and personal conversations between my family, my friends, I’ve decided to leave ‘Today’ in June.”
Vieira recalled her start on the show in September of 2006 and the advice that Matt Lauer shared with her. “I was so nervous and you said, ‘Remember that this is not a sprint. It’s a long distance run,'” she said.
Ann Curry will replace Vieira as co-host and Natalie Morales will step up to man the news desk in place of Curry.
