Moments after the Supreme Court of the United States ruled the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional and refused to rule on California’s Proposition 8, effectively legalizing gay marriages in the Golden State, President Barack Obama gave a congratulatory call to the lesbian and gay litigants in those cases. The call just happened to come in as the couples were live on MSNBC discussing their feelings in the wake of those historic rulings.
During a stand up interview, Chad Griffin, a same-sex marriage advocate, interrupted and declared that “the president’s on the line.”
“We’re proud of you guys,” Obama said. The president congratulated the couples for their courage and said that they were leading the way for millions of gay Americans and gay rights advocates.
“You’re invited to the wedding,” one gay man said to Obama.
