Speaking to right-wing talk show host and occasional Fox News contributor Andrea Tantaros on Tuesday, National Rifle Association board member Ted Nugent declared that musicians like Stevie Wonder, who plan to boycott the state of Florida in the wake of George Zimmerman’s acquittal, are brain-damaged from a lifetime of drug abuse and must not know what they are doing.
“When you live in a fog of denial, usually inspired by a substance abuse — you know with all the lies about dope being a victimless crime, I think you’re listening to the victims of this dopey crime, because their brains are fried,” he said. “They’re either fried on substance abuse, and all of them know who I’m talking about.”
Nugent added that he thinks it is hypocritical to boycott Florida when the city of Chicago has one of the worst violent crime rates in the country. “Sometimes you can’t bring truth into a liar’s life,” he said, adding that he plans to boycott Chicago instead.
Stevie Wonder announced on July 14 that he plans to boycott the state of Florida — and all other states that have “Stand Your Ground” laws — over the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the killing of Trayvon Martin.
“I’m just one person, I’m a human being,” he told an audience in Québec City. “But for the gift that God has given me, and for whatever I mean, I decided today that until the Stand Your Ground law is abolished in Florida, I will never perform there again.”
A petition started by the Democratic-affiliated group MoveOn also features over 12,000 signatures, all from people who pledge to boycott Florida tourism until “Stand Your Ground” is repealed.
An earlier report that claimed headlining artists like Jay Z, Madonna, Kanye West and The Rolling Stones had joined Wonder’s boycott has since been discredited.
