As John Oliver gears up to take over for Jon Stewart as host of The Daily Show for two months starting next week, he’s making the media rounds and getting some important advice. Last night on the Late Show, David Letterman offered Oliver some essential celebrity interview tips.

As Oliver explained that after 7 years as a correspondent, he knows how to present the “news” segments, but what he hasn’t done before is “interview actors,” something at which Letterman happens to be an expert. “See, my training in interviews is to make fun of people,” Oliver said, referencing his hilarious history of field pieces for The Daily Show. “So, I don’t know how to talk to an actor whose movie I’ve not seen.”

“First of all, excellent opportunity to catch up on a little sleep,” Letterman joked, before sharing some foolproof tactics he uses on his show. One, he tells the actor, “I’m really looking forward” to seeing the film. And two, he asks “where did you film that?” Letterman also taught Oliver how to end an interview when it feels as though everyone’s run out of things to say: “Anything else you need to tell us before we let you go here?”
